Tsunami-affected area in Banda Aceh
Source: BGR
The tsunami on December 26, 2004 was triggered by one of the most powerful earthquakes mankind has ever been exposed to. The catastrophe claimed more than 150,000 human lives and left even more people homeless. Large city areas of Banda Aceh, Meulaboh, Chalang or Sigli have been destroyed as well as villages along the coast of the Province Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. Necessary infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and communication lines had to be established again, but above all homes have to be rebuilt for the local population.
For sustainable reconstruction it is necessary to consider the natural conditions at an early stage of the planning phase and to put focus on the areas susceptibility to the impact of all kind of natural disasters.
BGR supports the project partners, the National Geological Agency (GA) and the local Authority for Mining and Energy (DISTAMBEN) to provide advice on georisk assessment and mitigation and to support reconstruction in the Province Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) with geological background information. The aim of the project „Management on Georisks, Province NAD“ is to supply geoscientific information on georisks to regional and town planners and to assist in implementing recommendations in order to better safeguard the living environment of the local population.
Although the catastrophe from December 2004 was so horrific, it has to be emphasised that Indonesia is not only threatened by tsunamis. The country is almost daily affected by natural disasters. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and flooding are posing considerable threat to the population. The cooperation between BGR and GA in the field of georisks already started in 2003 with the project on „Mitigation of Geohazards” in Central Java and the island of Flores. Within the project a new approach of „multi hazard disaster management“ was developed including the elaboration of recommendations for the local disaster management. The experiences gained in this project will also be incorporated in the project activities in Banda Aceh.
The project is carried out in close cooperation with GTZ and KfW as well as other implementation agencies. The 4 year project terminated in 07/2009.
